1. Facebook (FB) CEO Mark Zuckerberg mentions an astonishing statistic In the latest profile of FB CEO that 2.2 billion people—'a third of humanity,' use FB at least once a month. If FB were a country, it’d be the largest in the world. How do other popular social media sites compare to countries’ populations (pop)? Like FB, WhatsApp and YouTube have monthly user bases larger than the world’s two largest countries like China and India.

2. FB’s Msgr app has a monthly user-base roughly equivalent to those two countries’ pop. And chat app WeChat (or Weixin, in Chinese) pulls in the eqvt of 76% of China’s pop. These nos are a testament to the power of social media. Twitter, Reddit, Instagram, QZone and Chinese messaging app QQ. It’s also a testament to the power of the social media companies themselves. FB owns three of the world’s largest platforms like Msgr, WhatsApp and Instagram and Chinese company Tencent owns QQ, QZone, and WeChat.

3. Of the major social media sites, only Pinterest and Snapchat had fewer users than others but they’d still both rank in the top 10 largest countries in the world. Even massive countries around the world struggle to govern themselves. So perhaps it’s no surprise that companies like FB and Twitter have struggled to moderate the use and abuse of its platforms.
