FACEBOOK (FB) IS MAKING AI

FACEBOOK (FB) IS MAKING AI

DREAMTECH

General

1. FB is Making AI That Can Identify Offensive Memes. FB is bldg AI to look through every single image that gets posted on the enormous platform. In a blog post, FB describes a system it’s built called Rosetta that uses machine learning to identify text in images and videos and then transcribe it into something that’s machine readable. Rosetta is said to be live now, extracting text from 1 billion images and video frames per day across both Facebook and Instagram.

Tech

2. FB says text extraction and machine learning are being put to use to 'automatically identify content that violates our hate-speech policy' and that it’s doing so in multiple languages. Given the company’s well known moderation issues, a well functioning sys that can auto flag potentially problematic images could be a real help.

AI

3. Advances (adv) in AI are rapidly accelerating advances in other tech by enabling the ability to build models and simulations larger and faster than humans are capable of processing. As a result, tech is moving so fast that it is imposs to see all the potential consequences, much yet the applications, in adv.

Unintended Consequences

4. Innovation. Innovation itself is a catalyst for future innovation. As a result, an innovation by one person or org enables and encourages innovations by others. Consider that initial innovation in 3D printing, using plastics, enabled innovation in printing using a wide variety of materials, ranging from ceramics to metals and glass. Likewise, 3D printing spawned innovations in printing cars, buildings and, yes, even guns. The process happened so fast that plans for 3D printed weapons were available well before the airing of recent concerns about the release of plans for such weapons. This topic is just now becoming a focus of govt bodies and various orgs. The fact is, regulations have not curbed the development of the tech, nor are they likely to prevent its proliferation. Additionally, many innovations are the result of research for malicious purposes or as we like to call them.

5. New Tech. Everything from wireless comms to the predecessor of the Internet to autonomous vehicles has been a focus of govt research. As a result, a new tech often is developed and implemented in a variety of applications long before society becomes aware of it, or expresses concerns about it - long before it is utilized in consumer applications. Govt applications often include weapons. Note that this pattern is not limited to electronics. The same is true for energy, chemical, biomedical and other forms of technology. Additionally, advances in one form of technology often enable advances in other forms of tech.

6. Moving Tech. Adv in AI are rapidly accelerating advances in other tech by enabling the ability to build models and simulations larger and faster than humans are capable of processing. As a result, tech is moving so fast that it is imposs to see all the potential consequences, much yet the applications, in adv. This may be one reason that the entertainment industry often depicts the future so negatively and so often as the result of tech. It reflects our collective fear of those unintended consequences.
